Propane FireplaceS Basics

Gas fireplaces are noted for their clean-burning characteristics. Compared with wood fireplaces, natural gas and propane fireplaces produce much less carbon monoxide and particulate emissions.

There’s only one thing better than a roaring fire on a wintry night: a roaring fire that needs no tending, requires minimal cleanup, and doesn’t leave the rest of the house freezing cold. That’s what you get with today’s gas fireplaces. Long gone are the anemic blue flames and unconvincing “logs.” Modern versions burn much more realistically, with glowing red embers and tall orange-yellow flames that dance and flicker around ceramic-fiber logs molded from the real thing.

When it comes to gas fireplaces there are two kinds; vented and vent free or unvented gas log sets. There are a few primary differences between these two types of gas logs. Vented gas logs use a chimney or other flue system to allow the products of combustion to go up and out of the home. Not all gas log sets require ventilation. Vent free gas log sets have manufacturer specifications stating that their products can be installed without a chimney or other flue system.

Most built-in gas fireplaces with direct venting are “zero-clearance,” meaning they can be enclosed with wood framing and other standard construction materials, although offsets or heat shields may be required for some parts. Vent ducts typically run from the top of the unit and out through the nearest exterior wall, but many other configurations are possible. Island Wide Chimney Services will  install the unit and handle the gas and electrical hookups and install  the vent duct to make sure it’s safe. The wall above and around the unit can be finished with trim, paint, tile, faux stone, you name it.

If you’re springing for a new fireplace, you might as well spend a little more for the best features: variable flame (adjust it up or down as desired), electronic ignition (no wasteful pilot light; best with battery backup) and circulating fan (heats room more evenly and efficiently than passive radiant heating).

 Propane Fireplaces Maintenance

Island Wide Chimney Services recommends the annual cleaning of all fireplaces, chimneys, and vents. Propane fireplaces require annual maintenance. Annually we will arrive and do the following propane fireplace maintenance and operation list, typically:

  • Carefully remove and clean the glass assembly
  • Clean the inside of the firebox
  • Inspect the inside of the firebox
  • Clean the outside of the firebox
  • Reassemble the fireplace
  • Check the outside vent
  • Check your carbon monoxide detector
  • Check burner ignition
